I should explain, "The Captive Audience" was not actually the plan. I was (and still am) working on a full on album release for later in the year, fully intending for that to work as the debut of my commercially released music.
Then 2020 happened.
During the early part of lockdown, I continued work on the album until I could go no further until the current circumstances changed. Boredom set in, until a mate suggested I should release something called "The Captive Audience" as it was on brand for me, seeing as I'm a cynical git. I laughed and thought it was a good joke, then returned to my boredom.
But the title kept swimming around my brain, and I began thinking about if I could record SOMETHING during the free time I had. After all, it was just gonna go to waste otherwise. I had some spare songs that wouldn't fit easily onto any future albums. I knew a fantastic drummer who could still record his parts in lockdown. And I knew nothing about music production, so this could be an interesting experiment...
The end result is what lies before you. It's not perfect, and in an ideal world I would have used a proper producer, but it stands as a record of what I did during lockdown before I went back to my day job.
Two things before I let you go. With the exception of the last, all these songs come from season 8 of a show I do called "The Weekly Song Podcast" with my mate Roger Heathers. If you are interested in hearing the stories behind the writing of them, why not head over to Soundcloud, Spotify, iTunes or wherever it is you get podcasts to have a listen.
Also, I wanna thank two people that enabled this EP to exist. First, I wanna thank Bo Payne, drummer extraordinaire with Boundless Brothers for lending his talents and time to this project. Favourite part of recording each song was always receiving the drums back and playing them LOUD. Second, I wanna thank Roger Heathers (whose excellent music you can find elsewhere on this site) for suggesting the title, giving advice on mixes, and for not murdering me as I kept sending him constant production updates when he had more than enough work on his plate. You two are awesome.
Right, enough excuses. Cheers for listening.
